To the finish line

We got to the airport in El Dorado, AK this morning before the sun was even up at 6am. We got a ride from the hotel from a guy who's a local pilot and pharmacist.

It was really humid this morning when the sun came up and there was low IFR reported along our route. This turned out to be a fog layer with low tops around 1500' like we suspected. We didn't take off first thing this morning because we called to get WX briefings to find out what the deal was with the fog.

We took off at 7am and quickly found the cloud layer, which we were well above.

The clouds became more broken to scattered and we were able to see when we crossed the Mississippi River.

The flight was smooth but the winds weren't excellent. They weren't a headwind but we definitely didn't have a tailwind either.

We passed by the restricted airspace along our route and passed through the MOAs after confirming that they were cold. We managed to get though the Class C airspace at Mobile without being vectored and did our last flyby without any problems (other than the delayed handoff to tower and almost-birdstrike on final). The controllers were super friendly and they had us enter a downwind to the landing runway by following the coastline. The airport is right on the coast and really pretty.

After landing we parked and the FBO workers pulled our rental car right up to the plane.

Afterwards, we went to the hotel, got some lunch, and decided to go to the beach. We went with the girls from the University of Illinois to Dauphin Island, about 45 min from our hotel downtown. We swam in the gulf and got sunburned and it was lovely.

This evening there was a cocktail party for all the racers.

We won't find out how we did until Sunday. Regardless of how we place, we know we flew our best race. We have a feeling it's going to be really close this year because half of the race legs were eliminated.
